There is no “certification” required from most bareboat charter companies. WHAT?????

It’s true. The following is from The Moorings — the largest bareboat charter company in the world and the owners of Sunsail, the second largest bareboat charter company in the world:

“No formal certification is required for most regions. Complete our Sailing or Power Resume and we will immediately inform you which destinations are appropriate for your experience.”

So what do bareboat charter companies want? 2 things: #1: Your booking and; #2: A reasonable assurance that you will bring their boat back in one piece. That’s pretty much it.

The skills taught in this course are critical for both the prospective skipper and first mate and are focused on what charter companies want you to know: anchoring, picking up moorings and close-quarters boat handling. And they’d like that experience to be on a boat at least as large as the boat you plan to charter. In addition, they want you to have experience with basic navigation and a clear understanding of tides and currents. That’s about it for the charter company.

But we add to that, because we want your charter to be fun and relaxing and as stress free as possible.

This 5-day, 4-night live-aboard course is designed specifically for one or two couples who wish to bareboat charter in the British Virgin Islands, US Virgin Islands, Florida Keys, Bahamas and most US charter locations.

You will learn:

  • Double-handed sailing and boat handling

  • Close quarters maneuvering

  • Anchoring and anchor retrieval

  • Anchoring safely in a crowded anchorage

  • Picking up and dropping a mooring

  • Sail handling

  • How and when to reef

  • How to heave-to

  • Crew overboard prevention

  • Vessel energy management

  • Dinghy Launching and retrieval

  • Basic navigation

  • Vessel systems Management

and many other details that will make your bareboat charter more enjoyable.

To be clear, charter companies get the final say on whether they believe you are competent to skipper one of their vessels. They make this determination through your sailing resume. Our training is designed to ensure, as much as possible, that your resume will include sufficient repetition of the essential skills that they require. Moreover, it is our goal that you are genuinely confident in these skills. In our view, that confidence comes only through direct experience; not through watching others — be they instructors or classmates — but your personal and repeated practice.

Your 5-day Bareboat training Cruise departs From Bainbridge Island on Monday and returns on Friday
